we're following new developments in boston this morning. what we've learned about evidence found at the scene and what a doctor said this morning about the victims still being treated. >> reporter: an early-morning fire on the peninsula had a couple of and their seven children running for safety. an escape from san francisco juvenile hall. the search that's still going on at this hour. also, a big change for big bay area airports and how google is involved. "mornings on 2" starts now.

well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. it's weandz -- wednesday, april 17th. we're following new developments into the boston marathon bombings. claudine wong has more from the newsroom with more on the information we're learning this morning about the evidence and the victims. claudine? >> there's been a lot of information coming out about both the victims and evidence. want to start out with the pictures. these were just released overnight and it will give us a good look at the evidence. twisted metal in the pressure cookers, remnants of the black bags that authorities believe those bombs were transported in and these give us a good look at some of the other evidence found there. you have the batteries found there at the scene. you have wires and that appears

to be some kind of circuit board, all evidence that authorities hope will lead them to the person responsible for the attack. when you talk about the scene in boston, this morning streets remain blocked off. they are still processing the scene. and a lid from one of the pressure kooblgers was found ashe -- cookers was found on the rooftop across the street from the finish line. [screaming] >> also in the last few hours, we heard from the chief trauma surgeon and boston medical center. now, he says he's not going to be satisfied until every patient goes home. while he says recovery will be long, he also said in a press conference that they are making progress. >> initially we had ten or 11 considered critical. now we only have two. they are still critically ill but most patients are making good progress moving through

the process. >> a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life changes. reports about a microblob written by graduate student lig. she was one of -- lu lingzi. her name was just released this morning. she apparently had a microblob, a popular form of social 3450edia in china. that morning she posted a picture of -- media in china. that morning she posted a picture of her breakfast. she was at the finish line when the bombs went off. and that woman described as exceptionally smart and down to earth was gone. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. a marathon runner from los gatos says she's among the lucky ones who competed in the finals. she crossed the finish line two

hours before the bombs went off. she said she's relieved for both herself and family in boston to watch her run the marathon. she says "all i can say is thank god i'm fast enough to finish in that time so they were out of harm's way." an 11-year-old mars boy injured in the -- martinez boy injured in the bombings will undergo surgeries today. this is after a fund-raiser in his hometown. ♪ >> a local band provided the entertainment at the rocks restaurant on main street in martinez. workers volunteered their time and donated their tips. the fund-raiser was to help the family of aaron hearn. he was waiting for his mother to finish the boston marathon when the bombs went off causing a serious injury to his leg. however, he is expected to make a full recovery. stay with us here at ktvu channel 2 for continuing coverage throughout the morning of the boston marathon bombings.

we're gonna take you out to the bombings. a fire broke out at a home in san mateo where a man, his wife and their seven children were living. now, it started near the family car. it was parked right in front of the garage in the area of bermuda and annapolis drive. a man was getting up to go to work around 3:40 when he heard noises outside. >> it's furnt these folks were able to wake up and the husband was able to get everyone out of the house. >> the fire started near his car and then spread to their garage. investigators say it's still too early to know the exact cause of that fire. well, businesses that use google's mail and application services ran into a roadblock this morning but it locks like the -- but it looks like the problem is fixed. starting at 5:00 a.m. our time, the ap status dashboard showed its mail, drive service and application

services were disrupted. the problem affected businesses all over the world. however, g mail was not affected. the dashboard showed all services were up and running about 6:30 our time. so far no comment or statement from google. two people who escaped from san francisco juvenile hall last night remain on the loose. the two broke out of the facility at about 10:00 p.m. so far, san francisco police are refusing to say much about the case such as the ages of the juveniles and how they escaped. time now, 7:06. you are watching the toll plaza. >> everything -- everybody behaving? >> yeah. it's a 30-minute plus delay at the toll plaza getting into san francisco. no particular reason for it. just a lot of people coming at the same time. also the morning commute looks good. if you are driving on the san

mateo bridge. no major problems on that san mateo bridge. if you are driving on the nimitz freeway southbound 880, well, it's a little bit slow out of 238 down to union city. but it gets better by the time you reach fremont. let's go to steve. clear skies. for some, it's cold, cold morning. for others it's mild to warm. all dependent on wind and wind direction. any northeast wind it's balmy to mild. otherwise there could be a cold, westerly breeze. it will be sunny and it will be sunny for a while. i just heard from kelly up in bridgeport, 7100-foot level. still snowing. snow has to be light. not much left and reno, 30 degrees. 30 up in reno. for us it's going to be a sunny day. it will be a sunny week. in fact, the rest of the month looks sunny and warm here. really does. 56 to start in san francisco, we'll go for a high of 70 balmy degrees today. north-northeast wind really helps the coast and bay and that's what's in place right

now. seeing gusts to 30, 35. but warmer patterns starts -- i mean, yesterday, but it will kick in today. take us into friday. there are signs that next monday and tuesday could be warmer. stay tuned. everything is moving into the rockies. more snow there. severe weather for others. high pressure looks like it will be firmmy in place for the west coast. lingering clouds -- firmly in place for the west coast. lingering clouds for others. a band -- look at that. that's just lit up like a christmas tree. iowa to parts of omaha, nebraska, any parts there may be into min an ace plind chicago -- minneapolis and chicago, you may encounter delays. some of the temperatures that don't have a breeze are really cold. calistoga is 50. 39 sebastopol. 38 at middletown. there's some cold readings. look at the 50s. for some it's mild.

for others, it's a lot cooler. 22 in tahoe. 19 in truckee. 37 ukiah, 34 for eureka, no breeze there. our breeze is about 20 degrees warmer than any. the end result is a lot of sunshine. windy for some. it will be sunny for everybody and temperatures are warming u in novato. sonoma, 76. 7 -- warming up. 74 in novato, sonoma, 76. 70s to mid-70s, santa clara valley. 60s, 70s on the coast. palo alto 72. atherton, menlo park all in there as well. sunny and warm into the weekend and probably for a while. 7:09. an agreement has been made on a new corporate jet setter in san jose. ktvu's janine de la vega live near mineta san jose airport now with details on the city council vote that sealed this deal. janine? >> reporter: dave, we just learned that construction will begin here in this parking lot

this fall. we're here on the west side of san jose international airport. the airport doesn't need this place for parking anymore. last night, the city decided to lease 29 acres to a corporate jet company. the city voted 10-1 to let the airport finalize negotiations and go into a 50-year lease to build an $82 million facility next to the airport. they will construct ramp, and seven hangars, five of which will house jets of google's co founders and executive chairman. the airport will receive $3 million a year from the deal. it will receive up to $300,000 in annual tax revenue. neighbors in the area expressed concern about how more air traffic and noise levels would harm them but the mayor insisted that signature and the other jet companies will adhere to the curfew in place from

temperatures will continue to warm up. we're getting word of delays at sfo. the airport says flights to and from o'hare international airport will be delayed due to weather. thunderstorms in chicago are causing some flights to be delayed more than two hours on average. 7:13. earlier this morning, thousands of people lined the streets of london, paying their respects to former british prime minister margaret thatcher. now, the funeral was held at 3:00 a.m. our time at st. paul's cathedral. the v.i.p. bests included queen elizabeth and prince philip and members of the obama administration. this is the first time a british monarch has been present at the funeral of a british prime minister since the death in 1965 of sir winston church hill. extra security was in place after the boston marathon bombings. new gun control legislation

is in doubt after votes are scheduled in just hours now. kyla campbell has more. >> reporter: senators are scheduled to vote on nine different pieces of legislation starting at 1:00 pacific. we're 25eubging a live look -- taking a live look at the floor right now where dianne feinstein has been speaking. she thanked those who have been supporting her legislation. >> i'm grateful for the willingness to step up, show courage and do what's right for america. >> feinstein sponsors an amendment that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of magazines. that's not expected to get enough votes to pass. there are other amendments including some dealing with mental health. the main bill in the spotlight is the bipartisan plan to expand background checks to include seales online and at fun shows. some say it goes too far and some democrats in red states

are not willing to take the gamble. >> a sponsor of that bill, joe manchin, is speaking next hour to, again, explain the details of what's in his proposal. we'll hear from him next hour, live in washington, kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the senate committee is due to begin debate on a bipartisan immigration reform bill. john mccain and chuck schumer met yesterday with president obama about the legislation created by the so-called gang of 8. the president issued a statement after the meeting supporting the bill and calling for action. the legislation would dramatically remake the u.s. immigration system with a path to citizenship for immigrants here illegally. two new guest worker programs, one for farm workers, another one for low-wage laborers and a renewed focus on border security. according to the washington

post facebook worked hard to get a provision in the reform bill that will be helpful to technology companies. the proposed new rules would allow facebook and other high- tech companies to avoid a requirement that they make a good faith effort to recruit americans for jobs before hiring foreign workers. the high-tech industry has long complained about a shortage of qualified engineers and other high-skilled workers here in the u.s. america is footing most of the bill when it comes to overseas military bases. the senate armed services committee has found the u.s. is paying $10 billion a year to operate bases in countries including germany, japan and south korea. the report outlines problems in getting compensations from other countries and the pentagon may close some bases to save money. the distinguished warfare medal was approved by leon panetta, and some lawmakers were concerned that the medal

would be placed above those for battlefield valor. chuck hagel nixed the medal in favor of in addition to existing medals. he's trying to rebuild a tainted political career. but now mark sanford is accused of trespassing at his ex-wife's house. jenny san trdford said -- sanford said she caught him going out her back door in february using a cell phone as a flashlight. he's been ordered to appear in court two days after he runs for a congressional seat next month. producer seth mcfarland has gone on twitter defending himself in a controversy tied to the boston marathon bombings. he's strongly condemning a doctored online clip of his animated show that made the rounds on the internet. it shows the star of "family guy" using his cell phone to set off explosions at the

boston marathon. that fake clip was based on scenes from an episode aired last month. it's been pulled by the fox network. he issued a statement expressing his outrage and he adds "the event was a crime and tragedy and my thoughts are with the victims." watchdog groups are on the lookout for online scammers looking to profit from the boston marathon bombings. within hours of the bombs names were given. officials say charity fraud is common after a tragedy. people are being advised to research companies or websites before donating any money. the boston marathon bombings have led to extraordinary security measures in the nation's capitol. people are removing trash cans outside the white house, the

"time" says this is the first free issue of its kind. it includes exclusive photos and interactive features about the investigation and the analysis of the attack. "sports illustrated" hit newsstands today, remember that man falling to the ground? the cover simply reads "boston, in pictures and words." it shows the famous 78-year-old

man running and collapsing near the finish line when that first bomb exploded. pat summerall, one of the best, the nfl play-by-play star would worked 16 super bowls, unmistakable, unforgettable, he started working for cbs in 1961. stayed there for 31 years before moving over to fox for the last eight years of his broadcasting career. before that, he spent ten years playing pro football for the detroit lions, chicago cardinals and the new york giants. he died yesterday at the age of 82. he will be missed and remembered. your time is now 7:24. sal is back. he will help you get to where you need to go this morning. >> pat was one of my tav -- one of my favorites. >> good morning, everybody. let's take a look at what we

have now. the traffic is moving along pretty well as you drive on 280 until you reach downtown. then it's going to slow down on the way into the valley. you will see some slow traffic as well as you drive up to highway 17. no problems on 17 getting down to the bottom of the hill. this morning's commute is backed up for about a 25-minute wait before you make it into the city, before you make it on the bridge. dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge may be good options. a little bit of slow traffic on the bridge. for the most part, it's a decent drive to 101. let's go back to steve. well, clear skies. it's darned cold for some. it's really mild for others. sfo has a north wind of about 30 miles an hour. 55 degrees. livermore has a north wind of 25. there's some areas to the north that are in the low 30s. 50s for many. san jose 52. a mild morning for many, not

for everybody but for many. but warmer weather is on the way for across the board here. much of the west coast with that north-northeast wind. the wind will start to clear out. but high pressure is here to stay for a while. i was looking out ten days. there's nothing but high pressure until the end of airport. windy, warmer. it will be active for the rest of the country. we'll take a closer look at that. 70s for temperatures today. would not be surprised to get upper 7 as to 80s. not much change friday and there's even some hints that maybe next monday, tuesday could be warmer than 84. maybe some upper 80s. >> yeah, getting warm. well, did caltrans miss a chance to prevent the bay bridge bolt problem? what some state documents have revealed about some very important tests. >> reporter: we are live in hayward where police are trying to figure out who shot a woman while she was sleeping in her home. >> reporter: and we're live in san francisco. i'm like a kid in the candy store.

a woman in hayward had emergency surgery after being shot while sleeping in her home. you can still see the damage

hours later. ktvu's tara moriarty right outside the house and tara, you talked to one of her neighbors. >> reporter: that's right. residents at the nursing facility next door, a bit shaken. you can see the house where two bullet holes pierced the front window. that's where a woman was sleeping at 12:30 this morning when someone fired two shots inside. both of those bullets struck her in the head and neck. paramedics took her to eden hospital where she's undergoing surgery. officers cordoned off smalley street and scoured for evidence. we spoke to a nurse who works next door who said she was tending to a patient when she heard the shots. >> i just heard the pop, pop. when i went to the other room to take care of another resident, it occurred to me. i don't know what happened here. >> reporter: that nurse did not want to be identified,

obviously. we do know that a late 1970s car was seen speeding from the area. police are not sure if it's linked to the shooting. the victim told police she doesn't know who -- who would want to kill her. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. the family of audrie pott has filed a claim with the saratoga union high school district. the family accuses the district of negligence. an attorney issued this statement -- now, legal analysts say it could take a month before prosecutors decide whether three teenaged boys accused of sexually assaulting audrie pott should be tried as adults.

her family attended the hearing yesterday. a judge considered whether to release the boys to her parents. pott was a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide days after being sexually assaulted at a party last september. her family says she killed herself after photographs were distributed at the high school. a bizarre story. a man has died after being crushed at a manufacturing plant in baypoint. the man was operating a mixing machine at hankle corporation monday morning. that's when he became caught and was later crushed in the machine. her legs were amputated. he died late monday from the injuries. authorities say he was working at a temporary employee for the company which makes adhesives. that incident is being investigated. at&t is offering a $250,000 reward for help in catching the vandals who knocked out communications in the south

bay. someone cut a fiberoptics line early yesterday morning near san jose. that knocked out the 911, phone and internet service in gilroy in santa cruz county. 20 minutes later, a high- powered rifle was used to shoot at power equipment at the metcalf transmission station. that spilled oil used to cool the equipment. the sheriff's department calls it sabotage. >> they knew where to go for the fiberoptic. they knew where to cut. they also were able to take out some very, very critical parts of the pg&e substation. >> well, this morning, we can tell you 911 service has been restored. at&t is hoping to fix the damage by sometime this morning. pg&e says more power equipment may have to be take offline today as a result. a flex alert to save power has ended. investigators are looking for any information, any tips. they are collect -- they are collecting surveillance video and talking to residents about

it. in less than three hours now, san francisco's interactive exploratorium will reopen its sunshineny -- shiny new doors. brian flores joins us live from pier 15 and are you gonna get a sneak peek inside, brian? >> reporter: i will. i will, pam. i sayour tweet. i will be tweeting some pictures there in a few minutes huge day here. the grand reopening of the explorer toial. a lot of families looking forwarded to this one. they are gonna have 150 new exhibits from the previous location but they are gonna bring back some old traditions as well. i'm bringing in sabrina smith. you are holding some very special pieces in your hands. can you explain? >> these are two of eight pieces getting added and will be permanently installed and in our dedication ceremony, we're gonna add these to the bells to

signify -- we have a tradition of ringing the bell at the old museum every day to close out the day. so we found it only fitting to do this for this exhibit. these eight pieces will be installed by our speakers this morning in the opening dedication. >> reporter: all right. talk to me about how excited you are. this has to be a huge day for you. we are more than thrilled. you know, the space is gorgeous. it's three times the size of where we were before. it's got, as you said, 150 new exhibits in addition to 450 of everyone's favorite, favorite exhibits that are there. we have a new out door gallery, six galleries in all. a new bay observatory along the bay. fabulous new restaurants. we're just thrilled to be here. >> reporter: what are some of the new exhibits. i know there's the favorite ones. >> what are some of the new ones? >> they will be in the outdoor

area. we've never had an outdoor gallery. this is an opportunity, one of the reasons -- one of the many reasons we ploshed is to have -- we moved is to have some outdoor exhibits. there will be a rain testing exhibit. there will be great exhibits in our west gallery where human phenomenon and the science of sharing is challenged and expressed. we've got a wonderful new pinball arcade exhibit. there's quite a few new things to say and do. >> reporter: pinball arcade, i think i will go to that one. >> naud, shadow boxes -- in addition, shadow boxes which was commissioned. that's an all-favorite. we're thrilled that one is back and ready to go this morning. >> great, great. pretty frantic around here as crews are putting in the finishing touches. there's gonna be a little ceremony. gavin newsom will be here. mayor ed lee will be here and then the grand reopening of the

exploratorium begins. i just got word that i can go in and i think i will go in and play. i may be back at 8:30. [laughter] >> do check out the shadow box. we've missed it. >> reporter: yes, yes. pam says she's excited about the shadow box, by the way. >> oh, good. >> reporter: we're allicks silted, pam. i'm excited -- we're all excited, pam. i'm excited. gonna bring the kids here. back to you. >> thank you. new documents are indicating that a problem with broken bolts on the new eastern span of the bay bridge could have been avoided years ago. state documents are showing caltrans engineers ordered tests back in 2008 that could have revealed the problems. the tests were never done because the contractor reportedly said it wasn't necessary. the fixing those bolt problems could delay the spanned scheduled opening on labor day. >> i know sal will be keeping a close eye on that.

they keep saying it's not gonna delay the opening. >> they keep saying that. i will keep all four of my eyes on it. >> what are you laughing at? [laughter] >> all right. good morning. traffic is moving along relatively well. around the bay for this time of the morning, i should say. if you normally drive the bay bridge, this is what it normally looks like. you are not gonna see anything out of the ordinary. you won't see any crashes. it's a 30-minute delay. we would like to see it wide open but it's not happening right now. 30 minutes or so before you get on the bridge. highway 101 san francisco, some slowing on the central freeway. it's back under from 280s a -- backed up from 280. 280 and 101 looking good. if you happen to be taking a flight to chicago. you should check ahead, they've had some pretty serious delays at that airport there, o'hare. steve, let's go to you.

>> sal? >> yes. >> i'm going to show radar from chicago. how did you know. >> i'm just that way. look at the breeze here. offshore wind, north-northeast. north-northeast. that's really a mild pattern for the coast. getting that wednesday -- head to santa cruz, be in the 70s. much of the coast will be really nice. although there's still a few lingering clouds and snowshowers. not much left in the sierra. but everything is starting to calm down and move out. speaking of moving out. temperatures are moving out fast. san francisco and oakland in the mid-50s. i would not -- it would not surprise me to see warmer weather the next three or four days. there's some really cold lows if you are in wind-protected areas. there's a north breeze or a northeast breeze for many. i've looked out seven, ten days. thest are of april looks very active for the rest of the

country. this will be another system, another huge weathermaker as it goes across the country. high pressure is here aloft at the surface. it's not budging. bridgeport, 395 at the 7100- foot level. kelly says we're still getting light snow and 25 degrees. not much there. it will clear out. if you are heading to the mountains, could you encounter some -- you could encounter some. denver is dealing with snow, vail, aspen. it must be severe weather. there it is, heading right over chicago. things are lit up oef. lit up. severe clear here as we say unless you are up on the mountains. sfo 29 miles an hour out of the north. santa rosa, 42. 22 up in tahoe. 37 ukiah, eureka, 34.

reno, 30. there's cold readings for a few. around here, warm weather, a lot of sunshine. temperatures heading up. i mean, everybody. for a while here. in fact, it looks quiet. 70s on the temperatures. this is a pattern. this is where it could be warmer. it just demend on the wind direction. it will be close, oakland, antioch, both 74. i think you get the idea. if you get a west wind, it's not as wind. 73 san mateo, redwood city, 76. palo alto menlo park. is looks good. woodside, 70. if you like sunshine around 80s -- pam, you remember the 80s? >> i do. >> they are coming back. >> okay. thank you. right now, yahoo!'s stock is up slightly. this is after they announced the total revenue fell 7%. a big weak spot was actually in display ads which was a former strength for the sunnyvale

company. but the first quarter earnings climbed 36%. that's better than wall street expected. punching up intell stock right now. it's up about -- intel stock. it's up about .75%. revenue of $12-point 5 billion. that's just about what analysts had expected. but demand for pc chips is on the decline as pc sales continue to fall. now intell has to try to -- intel has to try to adopt to this. 7:42. we'll continue our coverage of the boston bombings and the investigation. and we'll take you live to where investigators uncovered an important new flew overnight. oakland police announce an arrest in the shooting death of off-duty paramedic, boyer.

investigators are following some critical new leads this morning two days after that terrorist attack. emily schmidt has been in there in boston all. you have more information. >> reporter: you saw that huge cloud of smoke yesterday? you realized how much power was in there. according to the national security adviser to talked to a law enforcement agent. there was a pressure documenter lid that went up -- cooker lid that went up in the explosion.

it landed on the rooftop. of this is critical. investigators so far have indicated they think one, if not two of the bombs was made out of a pressure cooker. finding another part of it and finding where it landed will be one more piece of what we know is a very complicated puzzle. pam? >> emily, since you've been there all week. and you are near a pretty big crime scene there. what about the businesses that are in that area? what is it like there? >> reporter: it's a really good question. when you look at the cars going behind me, it looks normal and then you go two more blocks down. it's completely shut off. you can't get to those businesses. we have the hotel that's very nearby. the perimeter is right on the edge of the perimeter of this crime scene. and the area that's blocked off and yesterday just to get back to my hotel after we were

talking with you, i had to show them my photo i.d. i had to show them my hotel key before i was able to go. and our hotel is not in the actual crime area itself. it just gives some indication of what's going on. even when you go along the perimeter. there are a lot of businesses there in the neighborhood. a lot of little restaurants, boutique stores. there was a candy store. business seems kind of like normal. you heard people talking about the bombing. you heard people talking about all of us here. this is so top of mind that even if they can go about physically their day-to-day business, emotionally, mentally, it does not feel like it would have monday before the blast. >> i'm sure that's gonna be the case for a while. emily schmidt there in boston, thank you for the update. in the bay area, organizers of the oakland running festival are putting together a special run tomorrow in honor of the

boston marathon bombing victims. the route will be three miles long. one mile for each victim killed in the explosion. the run begins at 7:30 p.m. at see jane run on college avenue. it will end at snow park with a candlelight vigil. those who plan to participate are being asked to wear blue or yellow, the colors of the boston marathon. criminal charges are expected to be filed today against the five teenagers arrested in oakland for the killing of paramedic quinn boyer. he was shot while in his car while at a stop sign in the oakland hills. yesterday, oakland police chief loud jordan announced five teenaged boys, two 14-year- olds, two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old had been arrested. >> the young men and women are finding it very easy, very comfortable to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger.

that's intolerable and won't be accepted. >> the funeral for boyer was held yesterday at saint teresa church in oakland. boyer attended school there and served as an alter boy. san pablo police are reporting a shooting at jerry's bar on san plaub boy avenue -- san pablo avenue. the police were scene examining a white van. police are expected to release more information later this morning. there's also new information in the threat against republican mississippi senator roger wicker. abc news is reporting that a second letter has tested positive with ricin. the letters were discovered at a postal processing facility in maryland yesterday where mail for members of congress is screened. a senator from missouri says federal investigators have a suspect. he's reportedly a person who often writes letters to lawmakers but authorities have

not yet commented on the investigation. new zealand now the 13th country to approve bay marriage. overnight -- gay marriage. overnight lawmakers voted 77-44 in favor of the bill. people watched starting to sing new zealand's national anthem for the vote. political party leaders encouraged people to vote with their conscience instead of along party lines. a federal appeals court in san francisco will hear arguments this morning about two lawsuits challenging a state law banning sexual or orientation -- sexual orientation. this is designed to make gay teenagers go straight. a first-of-its-kind law banning the practice was scheduled to take effect january 1st. the legal challenges say the ban violates civil rights. but supporters say it's a dangerous therapy. american airlines says most flights will be on schedule today. but that's after hundreds were

despite public opposition pay raises for san jose city lee efern -- city leaders are expected to be approved tonight. right now the current salary is $81,000. 56% of 400 people surveyed said that should be cut back to 75,000 a year. regardless mayor chuck reed is expected to approve a raise of 5%. 7:54. two bay area lawmakers are holding an event this week drawing attention to a backlog and processing disability claims at the department of veterans affairs. the v.a. acknowledges the problem saying there are more than 800,000 pending claims nationwide. it says the average wait time before a claim is processed is

help to find her. we're also learning that many of the injured have now been released from area hospitals. in a press conference held a couple of hours ago, the chief trauma surgeon said he believes all 19 patients still there will eventually be able to go home. that list includes two people still criticry injured. a man in his 60s and a 5-year- old little boy. >> initially we had 10, 11 considered critical. now we only have two. they are still critically ill but most patients are making good progress moving through the process. now, let's turn to new information about the evidence in this case. you are taking a look at new pictures from the scene that show the twisted metal and what appears to be a component -- to be components least behind from the pressure cooker bomb. the cnn reporting that the lid of a pressure cooker was found on the rooftop near the finish line. authorities analyzing thousands

of pictures. if you take a look at the picture you can see the bag right in front of the fence area. that's the same spot where a second pom went off. authorities -- bomb went off. authorities want more pictures. one thing we know for sure, people were taking pictures and videos well before the bombings happened and authorities believe someone out there could have a picture of the person responsible for this attack. back to you. a marathon runner from los gatos says she's among the lucky ones who competed in the boston marathon. she was a finalist. she finished the big race in less than three hours. she crossed the finish line almost two hours before the bombs went off. she says she's relieved for both herself and her family who are all there in boston to watch her run the marathon. she says -- mountain mike's

pizza pareler -- pauler is -- parlor is gonna hold a fund- raiser. ♪ >> a local band provided the entertainment at the rock's restaurant. workers donated their time and tips. this is young aaron hearn. he was waiting for his mother to finish the boston marathon when the bombs exploded causing a serious injury to his leg. but he's expected to make a full recovery. make sure you stay right here for us at ktvu for all of the continuing coverage of the boston boston marathon bombings. stay with us. a fire at a home in san mateo where a man, his wife and their seven chiv were living -- children were living.

that fire started in the family car parked in front of the garage. the man was getting up to go to work around 3:40 when he heard noises outside. >> just fortunate these folks were able to wake up and the husband was up early enough to get everybody out of the house. >> the fire started near the car, spread to the garage. and investigators say it's too early to determine the cause. businesses that use google's mail and application services ran into a roadblock this morning but it appears the problem is fixed. starting at about 5:00 our time, the app status dashboard shows the mail drive file storage service and office application services were disrupted. the problem affected businesses around the world. the g-mail for consumers was unaffected. the dashboard showed all services were up and running about 6:30 our time. so far, google not commenting. 8:04. more money and jobs are expected at mineta san jose airport thanks to a new deal to

build a corporate jet center. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: airport officials are thrilled an official says the construction is supposed to begin this fall in the parking lot. the space here in this parking lot is not needed pause they already created parking spaces on the other side of the airport during the recent renovation here. now, the city voted 10-1 last night to let the airport finalize negotiations and go forward with entering a 50-year lease agreement with signature flight support to build an $82 million facility on the west side of the airport. they will construct ramp space and seven hangars. five of them will house corporate jets of google's co founders and the chairman. the airport will receive $3 million a year from the deal and it will receive up to $300,000 in annual tax revenue.

>> there are significant amount of jobs associated with this project. up to 200 on airport and rejohnal construction -- regional construction jobs and more jobs with the development alone. >> reporter: people who live near the airport expressed concerns about noise levels and air traffic. but the mayor insists that signature and other jet companies have to adhere to the current curfew that restricts planes from flying from 11:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. one resident i spoke to said he and others are diskurblg -- discouraged over the city's decision and still worry about how many of the jets will generate 89-decibels because those jets that go under 89- decibels are exempt from the curfew. coming up, you will hear from the airport about why they needed all of the money and

revenue. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. we do have some sfo delays to pass along to you. the airport says flights to and from chicago's o'hare will be delayed due to weather, just checked in with steve paulson. there are thunderstorms in the chicago area. that's causing some flights to be delayed. some more than two hours on average. lawmakers are questioning the california public utility's commission to -- commitment to safety. a report shows the cpuc does not make safety a priority and the report says it does not challenge or fine as it should. 8:07. san francisco police still out there searching for two juveniles who escaped from juvenile hall last night. they broke out about 10:00 p.m. from the facility on woodside avenue in the twin peaks neighborhood. so far police are telling us very little about the case,

like how old the juveniles are and why they were in that facility. tonight, there's a community meeting on san francisco's central subway project. organizers expect a noisy discussion about plans to tear down the pagoa theater. officials want to know how much that part of the project is gonna cost. others worry about protecting nearby buildings and how that will affect nearby buslines. 8:08 is the time. speaking of traffic, what are you keeping an eye on, sal? >> we're looking at all of the typical commutes. i was just looking at the list. we don't have a lot of major crashes. a new crash, northbound 880 but it's already on the shoelt der. we're looking at the bay bridge and the typical commutes like that. the east shore. it's slow. you can see a lot of cars coming in. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see still

a rather large delay. it's improving a little bit. that's still a solid 20-minute delay before you make it on the span. i want to mention that traffic on 101 is a little bit slow. traffic on highway one is getting a workout. but again, we haven't seen a lot of major crashes, just a lot of typically slow traffic if you are thinking about 101 or 280 in san mateo, i think 280 is your better bet. let's go to steve. >> thank you. good morning. great visibility. the wind, a lot of people don't like the wind. a couple of reasons. that just seems to be my experience. it's around the 8.7 category, ash, oak, mulberry and grasses. saturday is supposed to be high. really high. so hunker down, do the best you can. north breeze, not only today but for the weekend. next week, maybe even for the rest of the month looks oh, so quiet here. some low to mid-80s.

he and pat toomey want sales online and at gun shows to be subject to background checks. but some republicans think that plan is far reaching and some democrats in red states don't want to risk losing in the next election. there's another plan that addresses mental health. dianne feinstein's plan will likely be shot down, they say. >> the government should not punish, harass law-abiding citizens in the exercise of their second amendment rights. >> i believe if we can save the life of a single american, we owe it to ourselves to try. >> reporter: but work on gun legislation does not end on today's votes. there are more debates expected in the coming weeks. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. funeral services will be held for the young u.s. diplomat killed in afghanistan earlier this month. 25-year-old ann smeddinghoff

died in a bombing while delivering textbooks in southern afghanistan at a school. she was one of five killed in the attack. secretary of state john kerry met her in afghanistan two weeks before her death. earlier this week, he traveled to chicago to meet privately with her family. the senate judiciary committee is scheduled to begin. senators john mccain and chuck schumer met. the president issued a statement after the meeting supporting the bill and calling for action. this would make the path for citizen to immigrants here legally and two new guest

worker programs. the proposed new rules would alou facebook and other high- tech companies avoid a requirement that make good- faith efforts to recruit americans for jobs before hiring foreign workers. the tech industry has long complained of a shortage of qualified engineers and high- stilled workers. >> watchdog groups are warning about online scammers trying to make money off the boston marathon bombings. within hours of the explosion, domain names registering the bombings were registered. some say charity fraud happens a lot after tragedies. they say social media is often used to cheat people out of money. people are being advised just research those websites or any companies before you donate

money. seth mcfarland has gone on twitter to defend himself in a controversy tied to the boston marathon bombings. there's a doctored clip that made the rounds online. it shows him use a cell phone to trigger explosions at the boston marathon. the fake clip was based on scenes from an episode which aired last month and has been pulled by the fox network. he issued a statement on twitter expressing his outrage and adds -- the fate of a proposed water front concert venue in san francisco right now, still up in the air. 9,000-seat building, the proposed building would be on pier ps 27 and -- piers 27 and 29. last night the entertainment commission was supposed to rule on restrictions proposed by neighborhood groups. instead they announced it couldn't act because two individual neighbors have taken legal action to keep that venue

from being built. a hearing has been scheduled for may the 8th. the fate of the sacramento kings remains up in the air, at least until next week. nba owners have delayed a vote scheduled for this week that could is -- that would have likely determined if the kings stay in sacramento or move to seattle. so far the league has not revealed any reason for the delay. but sources say it may be because of a complicate and unprecedented situation. the nba has never had to decide between two cities competing for the same team. 8:20. bad news if you like to hang out late in san francisco bars. city officials make an important decision directly affecting one san francisco neighborhood. it's another sunny but breezy day around the bay area. meteorologist steve paulson will be back to tell us how warm it will get tomorrow.

our reporter -- bombings. emily schmidt is in bosten to tell us what the investigators are focusing on -- boston to tell us what the investigators are focusing on. >> reporter: hi, dave. since we last talked, the press conference is looking like it may be more fluid. this is information coming from the fbi. there's indication that could be pushed back to later in the afternoon. what we do know from the fbi, though, is that they said they've received more than 2,000 leads, leads coming in from auld over the wold. they said -- coming in from all over the world. they said they are gonna analyze pieces of a pressure cooker that they believe could be the bomb. and fran townsend from cnn says a law enforcement official tells her they've now found the lid to one of those pressure cookers. here's where they found it. listen to this -- on top of a roof of one of the buildings

near the site. it's one more reminder of, one, how forceful the explosion was on monday and two, how big of a ground they have to cover as they try to gather all of these pieces to try to solve this very large and continuing mystery. emily schmidt fascinating. thank you for the update. appreciate it. two of the nation's largest magazines are publishing information about the bombing. collapsing to the ground near the finish line when the first bomb wrent off. organizers are putting together a special run tomorrow. it's in honor of the boston marathon bombing victims. the roof will be clear miles long, one mile for each victim killed in those explosions. the one starts at 7:30 p.m. at see jane run on college avenue. it will end at snow park with a candlelight vigil. if you plan to participate, you are being asked to wear blue osh yellow. those are the colors of the boston marathon. this is a story we've been following since 4:30, a woman was shot while asleep in her room. tara moriarty is outside of the house right now with new information that the shooting was not random. tara? >> reporter: we believe that the shooting is most likely deliberate. now that the sun is up and we're able to get a better look at the bullet holes.

you can tell they were shot at pretty close range and headed down into the living room, this front room where the woman was sleeping on a couch. that couch right up against that window. now we also spoke to a neighbor who says prior to the shooting, there was a couple fighting across the street. a man and a woman and a man was being very forceful. moments later, shots erupted at this home. we don't know if it's connected. but that's what some witnesses are saying. now two bullets pierced the front window of the house on the 500 block of smalley avenue on flag street. both bullets struck a woman sleeping inside, one on the -- one in the head, another in the neck. it happened around 12:30 paramedics rushed the woman to eden hospital where she's undergone surgery. we spoke to a woman who didn't want to be identified. she works next door at a nursing facility and was tending to a patient when she heard shots. >> i just heard the pop, pop. when i went to the other room to take care of another

resident, a resident said, i don't know what happened here, she came to me. >> reporter: a late 1970s car was seen speeding from the area. police are not sure if that's linked to the shooting. one witness said the arguing couple was walking. the victim is in her 20s. she told police she doesn't know who would want to kill her. we understand there were three others at the hole. her boyfriend we're told who has two children were there. but luckily, they weren't hurt. we're gonna check in with hayward police to see if they have any updates for you and we'll pass it along. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we are also continuing to follow reports of a shooting at jerry's bar on san pablo avenue in san pablo. it was reported at about 9:30. now, police taped off the parking lot and were seen examining a white van. bullet casings were also found on the ground. we just checked back in with san pablo police and they have yet to confirm any additional information at this point.

the highway patrol is investigating the -- investigating the death of a person who tried to cross 101 at the san pedro exit. the man was hit by two cars. the driveert of the first -- drive he of the first car immediately -- driver of the first car immediately pulled over. the driver of the other vehicle ran. new documents indicate a problem with broken bolts on the bay bridge could have been avoided years ago. state documents show caltrans ecnears ordered documents in 2008 that could have spotted the problems. the tests were never done because the contractor reportedly said it was necessary. this could delay the scheduled opening for labor day. let's check in with sal. what's going on? >> it's a little bit slow.

northbound driving up from the coliseum area to downtown. kind of the late morning rush. just a touch windy but certainly not like we had on monday when it was just ridiculous. the traffic is moving along pretty well once you get past 23rd. when you get to the toll plaza, we've seen some improvement here at the toll plaza, westbound. it is backed up for a 50-minute delay. if you are driving on the peninsula, the traffic looks okay. i want to mention if you are driving in san jose, northbound 101 has been slow. so has northbound 280. we had the earlier crash. so still unwinding for the -- unwinding from the commutes. 85 is slightly better. now let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. >> you are welcome. >> a little breeze that sal touched on. it's been a windy month. it will be sunny. breezy to windy at times. this is a north-northeast wind. when that happens, as you know, that's usually a warm direction for us this time of year. this will be no exception. probably for a while here. severe clear as we say.

coaster week on the temperatures. once we settle in, we'll see 80s and they will stay here for a while, maybe until next week. san francisco's interactive science museum set to reopen doors. brian flores is live from the exer to yore tum -- exploratorium. he's been playing -- i mean, he's been checking in -- [laughter] >> how is it going? >> reporter: i have been playing. turn around and look at the bay. we're constantly flipping around. we've wilt in -- we've built instruments. it enhances your view and it's kind to play with. it's fun to be here. it's like a housewarming -- housewarming party. we've been here for two, three months. >> we've kind of grown into the place. we're just so happy to have people come. >> we're looking at video inside the museum. there's about 150 new exhibits. what are some of the exhibits outside that people can see. there's wind exhibits. there's a beautiful piece. there's a brand-new piece, it's 150 feet long. a beautiful date board installation -- skateboard installation outdoors. >> reporter: when we took the tour inside a few interms ago, one of the -- minutes ago, one

of the coolest things i saw was this totally glass building where you can see amazing views. >> that's called the fisher bay observatory. it's a beautiful building. the views are spectacular. and susan, the curator of the gallery, has really made it a point to emphasize the outside looking in. not just from the eyes' particular point of view, it's geographical, it's biological. it's a way to see the landscape that's really enhancing. >> reporter: gonna be a great opening. there will be an opening ceremony, roughly around 9:00 today. gavin newsom, you can see a lot of the prep work. newsom will be here. mayor ed lee will be here as well. there's gonna be a little bit of a ceremony and then at 10:00, the doors officially reopen for the frand reopening of the -- grand reopening of the exploratorium. and parking, on site there's no parking. but there's an off-site parking space on green street that you can go to. officials are saying if you are

planning on coming down today in the next few days. it would probably be best to take b.a.r.t. that's probably the best way to get here. the nearest station is the embarcadero station. we're live here at the embarcadero, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. 8:40. the san francisco board of sumps approved a -- supervisors approved a ban opening new bars on polk street. for some people have complained the nightlife is out of control in the area. under this ban no new alcohol permits will be issued between o'farrell and california streets. supervisors are also looking at similar restrictions for the rest of polk street. and in berkeley, it's gonna be get harder to find a parking space on the uc berkeley campus. construction is underway. they closed the parking hall last month. that eliminated 320 parks spaces. it also temporarily closed the 100-space parking lot under

intercepted a letter addressed to president obama that contained a suspicious substance. now they are not saying what that substance is or where the note came from. the letter was flagged at a facility far away from the white house. the secret service says the president obama's life was never threatened. an agreement has been made on a new corporate jet center in san jose. janine de la vega is live near mineta san jose airport with details on the city council vote that sealed the deal. >> we're here on the west side of the san jose international airport. construction is supposed to begin in the fall here in this parking lot. the airport is leasing 29 acres to a corporate jet company. the city approved last night to let the airport finalize negotiations and go forward with interring into a -- entering into a 50-year lease to build an $82 million facility next to the airport. the signature will construct a

terminal, ramp space and seven hangars, five of which will house google's co founders and chairman. the city says the project will generate 500 jobs. they say the airport will receive $300 million from the deal and receive up to $300,000 in annual -- $3 million from the receive and receive up to $300,000 in annual tax. >> we need to pay for the pro ect j. our debt has come current and signature's development will really help us, you know, bring that to the bottom line in helping us with our debt service. >> reporter: people who live near the airport express their concerns -- expressed concerns about air traffic and noise levels because of the project. but the neighbor has insisted that signature and the other jet companies has to adhere to the current curfew that restricts planes from 11:30 p.m. through 6:30 a.m. a resident says he's

federal investigators, have a suspect. he's reportedly a person who often writes letters to lawmakers but investigators have not commented officially on the investigation yet. criminal chaurls are expect -- charges are expected to be filed against the five teenagers accused of killing quinn boyer, the paramedic. yesterday, oakland police chief howard jordan announced that five teenaged boys, two 14-year- olds, two 15-year-olds and one 16-year-old, were arrested. >> the young men and women are finding it very easy, very comfortable to point a gun at someone and pull the trigger. that's just intolerable will not be accepted. the funeral for boyer was held yesterday at saint teresa catholic church in oakland. boyer attended school there and served as an alter bye. the family -- ailer boy.

the -- alter boy. the family of audrie pott filed a lawsuit against the saratoga school district. the family claims negligence, that they were negligent in address the bullying that she encounsellerred at the high school -- encountered at the high school. now, legal analysts are saying it may take a month before prosecutors decide whether three teenaged boys accused of sexually assaulting audrey pott should be tried as adults. her family attended yesterday's juvenile hearing for the three 16-year-old suspects. a judge considered whether to release the boys to their parents. audrey pott's family says she killed herself after the sexual assault incident photograph toes were distributed at her high school. pg&e says a power line may have to be taken offline today

welcome back. le:53. we're following -- 8:53. we're following an unprecedented issue. arguments will be heard from two lawsuits challenging a state law banning sexual orientation conversion therapy. the controversial therapy is designed to make gay teenagers straight. a kifrt of its find -- a first- of-its-kind law was suppose to take place january 1st. supporters say this is a dangerous therapy. two bay area lawmakers are holding an event to bring

attention to a backlog in processing disability claims at the department of veterans affairs. the v.a. acknowledges the problem saying there are more than 800,000 pending claims across the country. it says the average wait time for a claim to be processed is 273 days. but at some -- but at some offices, that wait can be twice as long. in the meantime, veterans says they suffer physically, psychologically and financially. now, this week congresswoman jackie speier of san mateo and barbara lee of oakland will hold an event. it's this friday, april 19th to address this v.a. backlog. scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 this afternoon at the war memorial veterans building on van ness in san francisco. later today, president obama will welcome to the white house some injured military veterans on bicycles. it's part of the annual wounded warrior project's soldier ride. it's a cycling event to help injured veterans recover

physically and emotionally. all designed to raise awareness to those battling the physical and psychological damage of war. special events will be held today remembering the worst disaster in san francisco history. the annual survivor parade and dinner will commemorate, the april 18th, 1906 san francisco earthquake. both of those events take place this afternoon. only one survivor will be there. winnie hook. 107 years old. she was only two months old when the quake destroyed her home. we now know. headlines at the music festival. ♪ ♪ live and let die >> paul mccartney will open the popular three-day concert and the red hot chilip peppers and nine-inch nails will be there. this is the 6th annual event. august 9th through the august
